Top US Lawman Wears Liverpool Tie at Senate Hearing
The nation's top FBI official Kash Patel was seen in front of the US Senate judiciary committee on Tuesday wearing a necktie displaying the emblem of EPL team Liverpool.
Online Reactions
His accessory selection drew questions across social media. Firstly, it is extremely rare for a government official to wear a tie with the logo of a business or athletic club. For another, Patel has not publicly expressed support for Liverpool previously—at least not in words.
That said, he has been photographed sporting Liverpool ties on at least two distinct instances. One occasion was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was meeting lawmakers on Capitol Hill after Donald Trump’s electoral win. At the time, he was speculated to be joining the government. The second took place roughly five months after, on 9 April 2025, at a media briefing highlighting the arrest of narcotics traffickers by US authorities.
Multiple Ties
Notably, the necktie used on Tuesday was distinct from the earlier item. The earlier design had thick stripes and a subtle logo, while the newer tie featured narrower bands and a larger emblem—identified as the “heritage tie”.
His apparent owns several Liverpool ties implies that his choice is deliberate.
Heated Hearing
During Tuesday’s hearing, the mood turned contentious on multiple occasions. Patel engaged in a shouting match with US lawmakers Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He defended his leadership of the FBI, his firing of longtime employees involved in investigations related to the January 6 events, and a social media post in which he announced that a person of interest was in detention for the murder of right-wing figure Charlie Kirk—a statement that turned out to be premature.
“I do not consider it an error,” Patel stated to the committee. “I see it as working with the people to identify that there was a individual in custody.”
Political Divide
Should Patel actually support Liverpool, it would symbolize a stark clash of ideological allegiances. As one of the nation's top law enforcement officers, Patel has been a public face of a Trump’s renewed presidency that has used heavy-handed tactics to impact various aspects of public life.
This includes raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in public places that have led to the detention of hundreds of foreign nationals irrespective of their residency or citizenship. It also includes the sending of government officers to left-leaning US cities in response to alleged higher crime rates—claims that have been debunked.
Liverpool’s Identity
Liverpool, on the other hand, is recognized to be one of the more left-leaning teams in Europe, from one of the most left-leaning cities in the UK.
Famous Liverpool manager Bill Shankly once stated: “I believe the only way to live and to be truly successful is by collective effort, with everyone supporting each other, everyone assisting each other, and everyone having a share of the rewards at the end of the day.”
Though the operations of Liverpool have changed in modern times, elements of socialist ideology persist. Former manager Jürgen Klopp, who led the club to multiple triumphs from 2015 to 2024, described his personal politics by saying: “If I am doing well, I want others to do well, too. One thing I will never do in my life is vote for the conservative party.”
Historical Tensions
Liverpool’s fans also have a considerable history of distrust toward law enforcement. A lot of this originates in the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989, which took the lives of 97 Liverpool fans. Initially, police accused the supporters of violence and intoxication. Subsequently, independent inquiries found that the crowd crush was due to serious failures by police, who had deceived the public to shift blame.
The Director’s Background
Patel gained attention after the events of 6 January 2021, when he promoted a legal aid initiative for those arrested in relation to the Capitol attack. A former lawyer and advisor to conservative politicians, Patel used his ties with the previous Trump government to develop business ventures and a career in broadcasting. In both capacities, he advanced several conspiracy theories, including discredited allegations of voting irregularities and false statements about Covid-19 vaccines.
